Altar for 5rhythms class

AlTars

An altar is a portal — a bridge between the seen and unseen, the material and the metaphysical. When created with care and intention, it becomes a sacred site for connection, remembrance, and transformation.

I see altars as living artworks and energetic anchors. Like an island in a vast sea, they offer a physical place to land; a space to return to, again and again, to reconnect with your values, your guides, and your highest self. Whether simple or elaborate, an altar is a visual expression of devotion, presence, and creative power.

Altar-making is both an ancient practice and a deeply personal one. It’s a way of listening with your hands; an intuitive art form that invites you out of your head and into your heart. It’s a space to give thanks, set intentions, honor thresholds, and call in guidance. For me, creating an altar is often the first step before painting, writing, meditating, dancing, or pulling tarot. It helps me drop in and attune to the creative flow of energy, a practice in itself, and a portal into deeper presence.

In addition to my personal practice, I also design altars for ceremonies, events, and movement gatherings. The images below are from a series of altars I created for 5Rhythms classes in Somerville, MA (photography by Fima Furman).

If you're planning an event, ritual, or ceremony and would like to include a custom altar, I’d love to collaborate. Contact me if you're interested in learning more.
